The Harry Dabbs XJS (often part of their Platinum or Original collections) is a high-performance jump saddle known for its technical precision and the brand's signature "Performance Panel." While Harry Dabbs offers various tree options, the XJS is specifically designed for a streamlined, close-contact feel.

Suitability

The XJS is built to accommodate the modern sports horse, but it is particularly famous for solving fit issues for horses with "trapped" shoulders or sensitive lower backs.

  • The "Performance Panel" (Short Panel): This is the standout feature for horse comfort. The panels are cut significantly shorter than traditional saddles, meaning they "leave the back" sooner. This makes the XJS the gold standard for short-backed horses or those with strong, active loins that get sensitive if a saddle sits too far back.

  • Wither Profile: It is best suited for medium to high withers. Harry Dabbs trees often feature an "open head" design, which provides excellent clearance around the base of the wither and the trapezius muscles.

  • Shoulder Freedom: The XJS is designed for horses with large, rotating shoulders. The way the tree and panels are shaped allows the scapula to slide back and under the front of the saddle without hitting a "wall" of flocking, making it ideal for big-moving warmbloods or athletic Thoroughbreds.

  • Topline Shape: It generally suits a horse with some curve to the back. Because of the swept-up performance panel, it is less likely to "bridge" on a horse with a dip in their back, but it might have too much "rock" for a horse that is completely flat-backed (like a very wide, flat-backed pony or cob).

Key Features for the Rider

  • Close Contact: The XJS is a double-flap saddle but is designed to be very low-profile, giving you a "monoflap feel" with the flexibility of a traditional jump saddle.

  • Leg Position: The flap is forward-cut to accommodate a shorter jumping stirrup, making it a favorite for taller riders with long thigh bones (femurs).
